Over / Under Goals Explained
Bet on the total number of goals in a match, above or below a line such as 2.5, regardless of who scores them.
How this market works
Goal lines use half numbers so there can be no tie. Over 2.5 goals needs three or more goals in the match; under 2.5 needs two or fewer. The 2.5 line is the most traded, but lines from 0.5 up to 4.5 and beyond are available.
This is a market about game shape rather than winners. Two attacking teams who both need points suggest overs. A cagey top-of-the-table meeting, a first leg, or a defensive league like the Primeira Liga points to unders. It is also the market where league averages actually help you, because scoring rates are fairly stable across a season.
Reading the goal lines
- Over 2.5 at 1.80 — wins on 2-1, 3-0, 3-2 or any match with three or more goals.
- Under 2.5 at 2.00 — wins on 0-0, 1-0, 1-1 and 2-0.
- Over 1.5 is safer and shorter; over 3.5 is riskier and longer.
Best used for
- Punters who read match tempo better than results
- Bundesliga and Eredivisie overs
- Serie A, La Liga and PSL unders
Watch out
A single late goal flips this market completely. If you are betting unders, the last ten minutes are the most expensive part of the match.
