Betting Market
Handicap Betting Explained
Give one team a virtual goal head start or deficit, turning a lopsided fixture into a competitive bet.
How this market works
A handicap adjusts the scoreline before kick-off. Backing a favourite at -1.5 means they must win by two or more goals for the bet to land. Backing an underdog at +1.5 means they can lose by a single goal and you still win.
Asian handicaps add whole-number lines that can push, refunding your stake if the adjusted score is level, and quarter lines such as -0.75 that split your stake across two handicaps. They are the standard tool for betting heavy favourites in leagues like Ligue 1 and the Scottish Premiership, where a straight win bet pays almost nothing.
Reading a handicap line
- Favourite -1.5 at 1.90: needs to win by 2+.
- Underdog +1.5 at 1.90: wins if they lose by one, draw or win.
- Favourite -1.0 (Asian): a one-goal win refunds the stake.
Best used for
- Heavy favourites at very short prices
- Underdogs expected to keep the score respectable
- Getting a fair price in one-sided leagues
Watch out
Quarter lines split your stake in two. Understand exactly how a -0.75 or +0.25 line settles before you use it.
