Odds are probability with a margin attached
Divide 1 by a decimal price to get the implied probability. A price of 2.00 implies 50%, 4.00 implies 25%, and 1.25 implies 80%. Add up the implied probabilities across a market and you will get slightly more than 100% — that difference is the operator's margin.
This matters because it tells you what you are being asked to believe. If you think a team wins more often than the price implies, you have a bet. If you do not, you are just backing a favourite.
What moves UEFA Champions League prices
Team news is the biggest single driver, followed by money. A confirmed absence for a key attacker moves goal lines immediately. Heavy public backing of a famous club shortens its price regardless of merit.
- Confirmed line-ups roughly an hour before kick-off
- Injuries, suspensions and squad rotation
- Weather and pitch conditions
- Weight of money on popular clubs
Competition-specific pricing
Two-legged ties change how you should bet. A first leg is often cautious and low-scoring because managers protect against away goals conceded, while second legs can break open late once one side has to chase. Treating both legs the same way is the most common mistake newer UCL bettors make.
